Comments: With just 5 more months until negotiations begin, we need to get stronger. That means all you non members need to do some serious thinking about what you want out of this next contract, and whether or not you think the union gives you a better chance of getting those things. If the answer is yes, then you have NO GOOD REASON to NOT sign a card. If you feel you are being dumped on by the company, and you want someone to stand up to them and demand a fair contract, then why would you not want to be a part of that? We're all short of money, but we'd be a lot shorter if it wasn't for the union. Is it because you're scared? They cannot fire you for being a union member, so that's a lame excuse. So what's stopping you? Every once in a while in our lives we come to a fork in the road and have to make a decision. We usually make that decision based on common sense and any facts we might know of that point us toward one fork instead of the other. I just gave you some good reasons to take the fork toward the union. I bet you cannot come up with any excuse that even remotely comes close to countering those reasons. And yet, many of you will probably stumble on past the fork and take the wrong road. If you do, I hope you spend many sleepless nights questioning your reasons and your integrity. Hopefully you'll toss and turn and eventually change your mind and join us. It's not too late. This will be a difficult negotiation, and having you as a member adds numbers and strength to our arguments.

Comments: Why be a union member?? Qoute, "I don't like how things are ran by the union or the people who are running it: Your signature on a membership card gives you the right and the opportunity to help run the union. The union leadership and stewards are made up of workers just like you who volunteer their time to represent your interest and objections to management. If you feel the leadership or a steward are not running the local correctly, it is your obligation to bring these issues before the membership so that the union is ran in a fashion that meets the membership needs." Those sure sound like inspiring words, I would hope that all are true. Belive it or not I would have supported my union's decision, either way, because I do belive in meeting the needs of the membership, not just my needs. That's what UNION is all about, for me. I want to thank the ENTIRE E-board for all the hard work, and time spent representing the entire Local. Again, as I said last night my vote was NOT a vote of no confidence, it was just part of how the process is designed to work. Thanks, again for being in MY UNION. Local-3176. Your Solid Brother. Comments: Since this is the "un-secure" portion of the website, and even non-members have access to it, let me take a few minutes to address any of those non-members whose curiosity has prompted them to give the site a look. We begin negotiations on Feb 28th on the contract that will govern our job conditions, pay and benefits for the next several years. Yet there are still some of you out there who don't seem to grasp the importance of that fact. Many of you either just don't like unions and would rather go it alone and take whatever the company decides to give you ... or you like what the union can do for you but you'd rather have someone else pay the dues and do the work. In other words, "Just give me the goodies but don't expect me to help"! The good news is that we've signed a large number of new members over the past several months and they're still coming. However, there are still some of you out there who, for whatever reason, just don't want to do your part. One of the excuses I hear all the time is, "I've got some financial obligations to deal with but I'll join when I get them taken care of". One guy has been telling me that for nearly 2 years. He complains constantly about the existing contract but always cuts the conversation short when I suggest that he might want to sign a card. The bottom line is this. We ALL have financial obligations to deal with. But the little bit that we have to pay in dues is a small price to pay for what the union brings us. If you were a college athlete drafted by a pro team, would you consider signing with a team without having representation to ensure you got a fair contract? I doubt it. That is what the union does for you. CWA attempts to negotiate a contract that is fair to all employees. Members who attend meetings can have a say-so in the process, passing on to the bargaining team their fears and concerns. And once the contract is signed, the union is there as a "watch dog" to see to it that the company adheres to the terms of that contract. That's what the grievance process is for. And when necessary, that's what arbitration is for. Is it a perfect process? Certainly not. But it's the best we've got. And when both the union and the company negotiate in good faith, there is the real chance of coming out of the meetings with a fair contract that both sides can be happy about. And one more thing ... The union takes care of it's own! Talk to the guys who were on the picket line for 52 days in October and November of 2005. Nobody lost their home. Nobody lost their car. Nobody had unpaid medical bills. The union stood by us all and together we got through it. So, to those of you out there who still haven't signed up, think about what I've just said. You can be a part of the solution, rather than a part of the problem The stronger in numbers we are, the more clout we carry to the table. Talk to any steward and he or she can get you signed up. Don't keep putting it off. Negotiations begin in 8 days.
